URL link to clone a template story

Question

Does someone know a way of creating an URL Link which executes the cloning option of a specific ticket?

I want to hit a bookmark that then opens a cloned ticket (our template story ticket with all the required DOR checklists etc from our template story), to make it easier to quickly get tickets on our board. This is in JIRA cloudl

Hi @Charli Parker,

Tomislav and Bartosz covered the native options: a manual Automation rule with Clone work item, or a Create link with the space and work type preset. One catch with the link: on Cloud it opens the older full-page Create issue screen with an empty description, so the DOR checklist still has to come from somewhere.

I'm with Terano Apps, and we built Templify so a story like yours becomes a reusable template instead of something you clone. Two ways it gets you close to one click:

Bookmark the template itself.

* Open your template story and set it as a template in its Issue Templates panel.
* Put a placeholder in its summary, for example {Story title:textfield}.
* Bookmark that story. When you need a new one, open the bookmark, click Create issue, then Next, type the title and click Create.

The new Story gets the whole description with the DOR checklist and its own title, so there is nothing to rename or tidy up afterwards.

Or make it the default for every new Story. On Templify's Issue Templates page, add a default for your space and Story. From then on, Jira's own Create form asks for the story title and opens with the checklist already in the description, ready to review before you click Create.

This works for a checklist kept in the description as action items, like the one in the screenshots.

Templify on the Atlassian Marketplace

The others have already covered the solutions available natively in Jira, so let me suggest an alternative using an Atlassian Marketplace app. Depending on your needs, you can choose either Clone Expert for Jira and Advanced Template Cloner for Jira.

With either app, you can create a bookmark that takes you directly to the cloning screen with your template Story already loaded.

Here's how it works:

* Open your template Story in the cloning app.
* Save the URL as a bookmark.
* Whenever you open that URL, the cloning screen will load with your template Story.
* You can make additional customizations if needed, or simply click Clone to create a new Story.

So it's not quite a one-click clone, but it gives you direct access to your template with just one additional click to create the new Story.

Which app should you choose?

* If your template is a single Story without subtasks or linked work items, either app will work.
* If your Story includes subtasks, choose Clone Expert.
* If you need to clone a Story together with its linked work items, choose Advanced Template Cloner.

Regarding your Definition of Ready checklists: If they're stored in the Description or another text field, they'll be cloned along with the Story. The apps also support cloning checklists created with Checklists by HeroCoders and Smart Checklists by TitanApps.

Hi Charli, a bookmark can get you close: Jira still accepts a Create link with parameters (CreateIssueDetails!init.jspa with pid, issuetype and summary), which opens the Create screen already set to your project and work type. Atlassian's support site has an article on pre-filling the Create screen with a URL. It does not copy the template story, though, so the DOR checklist still has to come from somewhere.

Disclosure: I build Checklist Flow, and this is exactly the case we built it for. How it would look for you:

(1) Save your DOR list once as a checklist template, or start from one of the built-in Definition of Ready / Definition of Done templates.

(2) Set it to apply automatically to every new Story in your space. Whether you use the bookmark, the Create button or the board, the checklist is already on the ticket.

(3) Mark the must-have items as Required and add the app's validator to the transition into Ready or In Progress. Jira then blocks the move and tells the person which items are still open.
