Time since Updated

I have a customer that is trying to get a running counter of time since the last update was done. They want to have a dashboard widget that shows each ticket, and the time it was last updated, plus another column showing how long it's been since it was last updated. 

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can accomplish this?

Aside from using SLAs, the only other optionI can think of is to create a dynamic custom field that would calculate the time difference between the last updates date and now; without actually storing the value on the issue.
