I just started using and created a new item. I am building a timeline and there seems to be no way to remove items that I create. How can this be?

Then you probably have not deletion rights.
What type of project are you using, team or company managed?
Can you show the permissions and the role you have.
Be extremely careful about giving delete permission to anyone. The forum is filled with people wanting to recover issues deleted by mistake. You can't. There is no recycle bin in Jira. There is a paid plug-in that will keep track and allow you to recover an issue, but Jira doesn't allow it.
