Are Archived tickets still searchable

If I do a search in JIRA, can Archived tickets show up in the results? Is that configurable by a search parameter to explicitly include (or exclude) Archived tickets.

I want to make sure that the only real benefit of Archiving is to make those tickets read-only.

No, archived issues will not be included in search results and that is not configurable.

The benefits of archiving issues (or projects) is that it makes them read-only and it excludes them from the indexing used by searches, which makes the searches faster.
