Add additional profile attributes to Jira user that can be populated by an external source

Is it possible to add additional profile attributes to the user profile in Atlassian that we can populate over API and then use in various automation rules? I've seen ways to add key/value attributes to individual users, but that is not a sustainable way to manage these across hundreds for employees.

Yes, that is possible by using user properties that is only available via the API and in automations. Have a look at this article that adds the user's Slack member Id as a user property that then can be used to mention them directly.
