Inheriting fields from Parent (Project) to Child (Epic, Stories)

Question

Hi, I am looking for help to inherit custom fields from parent > child either via Jira Automation or a cloud extension.

Here is the hierarchy that we are using:-

* Project
* Epic (linked to above via Parent link)
* Stories and other issue types (linked to above via Epic link)

We are adding a single-select custom field at the project level and need the selected value (if selected) to be inherited at the lower levels.

This would happen on creation only.

Hi @johan.behl ,

Depending on your actual use case, a simpler solution may be to use JQL.

Standard JQL doesn't easily allow it, but you can quickly find the children of epics with a custom field value using our professional indexing service JQL Search Extensions

After you install the app, you can simply search:

issue in childrenOfIssuesInQueryRecursive("project='ACME' and type=Epic and 'My custom field'='my value'")

You can do this with automation using variables and it will work for a single select list. You need to know the customfield id of Parent Link in your instance and you can get that by going to the API view of an issue which has a Parent Link .atlassian.net/rest/api/3/issue/ Trigger: an Epic is created Action create a variable VAR with NULL value Branch on JQL: key = {{issue.customfield_.data.key}} while in branch, create variable action again, same variable name VAR , value: {{issue.}} Back on main branch, Edit field with {{VAR}}

Adding more clarity - I am not trying to create an issues via automation.

This hierarchy exists:-

* Project
* Epic (linked to above via Parent link)
* Stories and other issue types (linked to above via Epic link)

Triggers:-

* Someone creates an Epic with Parent Link = Project. Now, I need project's custom field value to default on the newly created Epic.
* Someone creates a Story with Epic Link = Epic. Now, I need Epic's custom field value to default on the newly created Epic.
