How to add daily capacity per user?

I try to plan my sprint and I want to set a very basic settings TMHO.
It used to be so simple in TFS and I have no idea why Jira made it so complicated that I had to read more than 3 articles and still I wasn't able to find it.

I have 2 developers in my board/project/sprint/whatever and I want to set for each of them hours per day capacity, one developer has 6hrs/day and the other one has 5hrs/day.

When I plan a new sprint for 10 working days I expect to see a capacity by my developers, 10*6 + 10*5 = 110hrs in total.

I expect to see in the sprint how many hours left after each day.

How can I accomplish this very hard and complicated task?

Jira is aimed at the Agile process marketplace which emphasises the team over individuals, and hence it doesn't have that level of micro-management.

There are apps that add capacity planning type stuff to it, but natively, there's nothing more granular than the team's ability.

I can sense your frustration about Jira in this question of yours ("...this very hard and complicated task", "DO NOT refer me to an article.") .. as well as in your comments on the following threads:

I would strongly advise you not to work with Jira. Clearly, it's not for you (and I'm not saying this in a bad way). You are used in a certain way of doing daily things (TFS) and from what I understand you are unable/unwilling to give time to yourself to get familiar with Jira and change the way you used to work.

If people in this community point you towards articles or past questions, is because either Atlassian has written down everything for you, or somebody else has asked the same question which was answered in another thread.

Now, if you manage to read all of the above, I will answer to your question by saying that there is no out-of-the-box functionality for what you ask. It is doable, but not with a single click. And it requires to do some reading. If you are up for the challenge, I will be more than glad to try and help you out.

It's so easy to say to a paying client:
"I don't want you as a client because you are too much of a headache for me"

Instead of improving your product to be more intuitive,
I don't see Facebook writing articles over articles on how to set user settings or Google explaining their Search Console to their users.

And of course I am not alone, you attached a link that proff my point.

Thank you for clearing this issue for me, I disagree with this conception, software development is more about the individual, because programming skills vary between developers, 1 skilled programmer can make the work of 10 other programmers and etc...

Back to the issue I am having,
please confirm if I understood it correctly,
in order to have time estimation for a sprint I need to globally set the working hours per day and the sprint capacity will be calculated by it's duration regardless to the individual developer capabilities?

Agile is one way to do things, it's find to think in other ways. I think my point here is that individual capacity and hourly measurement is not Agile, given that it does all the planning and prediction at a team level, so when people write tools to support Agile processes, they tend not to bother putting in things that are not Agile.

In order to have a time estimate for a sprint, you should be looking at what the team can usually deliver in a sprint (the velocity) which then tells you how much they should draw into the next one. There's a lot of stuff on the internet about how not to under or over load the sprint and even more on how to continuously improve it.

The working time per day is not really that useful in sprints - just because a team of 7 has 40 working hours per week each does not mean they're going to deliver items adding up to estimates of 560 hours consistently in every 2 week sprint. In fact, the delivery should be a lot lower because no-one works like that in reality, and holidays, and overhead, and and and.

So, yes, in order to get an initial capacity for your sprints, you set the working hours per day globally, and the capacity will be calculated for the team.

Once you've done some sprints, you'll be able to start gauging actual real-life capacity for the team by looking at the velocity. That's one of the good things that Agile brings to your planning - you stop using figures that you're essentially guessing at (because they're based on the assumption that humans are simple robots on an assembly line), and start using capacity planning that is based on actual capacity.

A long-time user of both TFS and Jira and as a Certified Scrum Master, there is more to capacity planning, as well as product planning, than a 'set it and forget it' team capacity.

Individual capacity, and variable capacity, isn't necessarily about policing if one developer is doing more than another. It's essential to adjust capacity to account for

• short-staffing due to holidays

• PTO, vacation, medical leave (short-term)

• training

• extended or extensive meetings.

• a short trip around the planet on on a rocket ship

Most adjustments are short-term and it's essential to accurate planning to account for these.
