Can we roll up sub tasks estimate to user story level?

Hi,

In a scrum team, we have a user story in Jira with 4 subtask:

1. subtask for design

2. subtask for development

3. subtask for testing

4. subtask for deployment

We are estimating at user story level using story points considering total effort required to do design, dev, test, deploy. Going forward we want to have estimate at each sub task level so that it automatically rolls up story point value to user story level. Is this possible?

I see sub tasks can only be estimated using min/hours/day is that true or we can make some changes in jira setup so that sub task estimate will roll up to user story level with story point? Please let me know what works?

There is no built-in functionality to roll up story points from Sub-tasks to parent Stories.

In general the agile methodologies do not include using story points at the Sub-task level.

You might be able to develop a work-around to make the Story Point field visible at the sub-task level, and use Automation to sum up the values and then insert the value into the parent story. I'm not sure if those are options in the Free version of the product though.

Thanks for your reply. When you say develop a workaround to make the story point at sub task level, can that be done changing the jira setting for the sub task properties or do we have to invoke any external coding to customize that. Please help with this.

I believe that by default the Story Points Estimate field is not enabled for Sub-tasks, and the field is not on the screens that show for sub-tasks, but in the Standard Plan for JIRA Cloud we can customize the available fields based on issue types and by customizing the screens.

I don't know if the Free Plan includes the capability to customize in that manner.

I also don't know if the Free Plan gives you access to both Classic and NextGen project types. The path you would follow to change the available fields is different depending on the type of project you are using within JIRA.
