Why is the "Atlassian Recommended" indicator being used again?

Greetings, community!

The Atlassian Recommended indicator is once again being used and I wonder why. The existing post-ordering mechanism appears to be:

  • when there are no votes or accepted answers in a thread...
    • display top-level posts in reverse order of submission: most-recent first
      • child posts are shown in order of submission: most-recent last
  • once there are votes...
    • display posts with the greatest number of votes first
    • with an equal number of votes, show in order of when the votes were added
    • remaining posts without votes use the original ordering
  • once there are accepted answers...
    • display accepted first, then follow the other ordering flow

Once an Atlassian team member tags a post with Atlassian Recommended, it goes to the top, pinning it there, regardless of what the community considers better ideas through voting and acceptance.

In the past, I observed use of this indicator for better answers, or to halt discussion on "spirited conversation" threads, often followed by locking the thread to prevent further posts. That behavior led to follow-on threads asking why the conversation was halted. Using the indicator appears to have stopped a few years ago, letting customers share their thoughts in more active threads (i.e., vent a bit). I believe this approach helped in one recent case when the Status field was moved on the work item page, eventually pulling the head of product into the discussion to help resolve the challenge.

Would an Atlassian team member please help explain the indicator's usage? Thank you!

Kind regards,
Bill

Hi @Bill Sheboy ,

Thank you for your question and for calling this out.

Would you be able to share a few specific examples or links where you’ve seen this recently? That would be really helpful for our review and will make it easier for us to investigate.

Many of us are out of office over the holidays, so our follow-up may be a bit delayed, but we’ll definitely look into this.

Happy holidays!
