Welcome Wednesday: How will you "unplug" for the holidays?

Wednesday.gif

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

Back at the beginning of November, Atlassian held a virtual webinar about “Unplugging“ for the Holidays.

And, if you have been paying attention to any of the #AtlassianCreator posts you make have seen how some of them plan to use the Team Work Collection to help them unplug for the holidays.

My question for you this week is: How are you planning to unplug during the holidays? And, if you aren’t are you planning to do it some time before or after the holidays?

For myself, back before we had kids, my wife and I would both work during the holidays. We would have the standard statutory holidays off to be with our families, but we would work the other days. It was quiet so we could be productive and get some work done. Then, we would take time off after the Christmas rush when everyone was back to school/work.

Nowadays, I’m finished the Friday before Christmas (usually around my daughter’s birthday) and I’m not back until the Monday after New Year’s. During that time we go into an unofficial shut-down where I won’t be checking my phone or my laptop until I’m back.

Alright, now it’s your turn. Let me know in the comments below.

Have a great rest of the week!

I’m all set to catch up on the latest updates with the help of Rovo once I’m back from vacation.

Taking the month of December off from work and headed to our house in Utah. Besides the much needed rest and winter fun, I will be studying for Jira and PMP certification.

I am old, so, by the time people could be plugged in to work all the time, I was very used to being unplugged. I was not in a mission-critical job, so I never picked up the habit.

This is the year for people in my family to come to us for Christmas, but they will be going home on the Sunday after Christmas, so I am only taking the day after Christmas off and saving my vacation days for another time.

I'm in a very similar boat as you @Jimmy Seddon - before kids I'd work up until Christmas eve and then take a few days after the new year to unplug, but now with a kiddo, the last day of school is Dec. 18th and he doesn't go back until Jan. 5 🫠 so I'll be shutting my laptop and turning off phone notifications as well. When I'm out for more than a week I'll make sure to have a out-of-office page in Confluence that lists the status of my project work, and who to reach out to for any urgent needs. I also set a Slack status that doesn't end until the morning I return.

Happy Holidays, Jimmy! 💚

I usually take the week of Christmas off, but being new to this job, I can’t this time. That said, I’ll be dedicating Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to enjoying time with my family.

Working from home makes it easier to stay connected - not sure whether that's good or bad! My kids are old enough that I can easily work during their 2 week break, but I will take a few extra days off and my husband will take a few extra days off throughout those two weeks. It should be a quiet couple of weeks at work though, which is always nice to plug away at some projects.

My wife and I will be heading up to Utah to volunteer at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary over the break. Looking forward to spending time with those furry, four-legged beings!

Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday/break!
