Throwback Thursday: What was your favorite board game growing up? #TBT

It's Thursday!

giphy

I grew up with Monopoly. That was played quite a bit at my parent´s house. I also remembering playing different card games (52 cards) and Battleship.

Did you have a go-to game that always came out on rainy days or family nights? Monopoly marathons that ended friendships? Risk battles that lasted all weekend?

Soooo, what was your favorite board game growing up?

Let’s make it a great Thursday!

Hello All,

Warhammer Fantasy.

Fun fact: I haven’t had much time for board games lately, but maybe that is exactly why it is time to find a group and start playing again.

I grew up playing cards, but now I play chess more. It's actually been a while I played any board game though.

Monopoly was quite famous here as well, but I think the most played was Ludo, or as it is in Bulgarian "Don't be mad, man" :D
(what an epic translation if I must say)

I never liked board games, really :)

But... Rummy was extremely popular and I played it a lot in my pre- and teens - with friends, family members, classmates, everyone seemed to be playing it. Even nurses at a children mountain sanatorium where I spent almost a year during my 5 stays. We actually had proper tournaments :)

And then there was... chess.

The only two board games that I actually enjoyed playing for a while were 'Treasures of Ancient Egypt' (because it was very nerdy educational) and Euro Trucking (hauling goods across Europe; because I loved anything automotive).

@Teodora V _Warsaw Dynamics_

Oh yeah, that was every where. Not my cup of tea but I remember it as Človeče, nehnevaj sa - Slovak and Člověče, nezlob se - Czech.

Which seem to be literal translation of the German original Mensch ärgere Dich nicht :)

@Kris Klima _K15t_  Same here. I always liked board games, but some of them are so complex that I was honestly close to losing my patience. 🙂

Snakes and Ladders - it was so simple, no skill required, and great to play with younger kids :)

Not a board game, but ... when we wanted some real competition, we’d bring out Pick-up Sticks (bierki) or tiddlywinks (pchełki)!

We had a few. Sorry. Risk, and Stratego. My dad stopped playing me in Stratego and refuses to this day to play that game anymore.

My sister and I were especially cutthroat at Speed (the card game) as kids.

If my mom was in a mood to play, too, the game would usually be Skip-bo or Scrabble.

@Kris Klima _K15t_ @Teodora V _Warsaw Dynamics_ There's a similar game in the US that's called "Sorry!" but I don't remember anyone ever being penitent about ruining anyone else's plays 😂

We played a lot of board games growing up—Monopoly, Risk, Go to the Head of the Class, Backgammon, Clue, Trivial Pursuit, etc. My favorite is a game called Mühle that my brother brought home from a trip to Switzerland with a friend's family. I never saw this in the US, though the internet says that it is known in English as Nine Men's Morris or Mill.

Great topic @Kristján Geir Mathiesen We had an old version of Monopoly (wooden houses and hotels) as well as Scrabble (again wooden tiles) for rainy day entertainment. But our go-to was the card game Cribbage - not technically a board game but uses a board. And yes, we did score a 29 once - well it was my friend who scored, but I celebrated nonetheless.

We played many games with boards and cards and various other creative objects. I remember the Christmas we received our first copy of Monopoly. Other favorites: Sorry, Parcheesi, Dutch Blitz, Rook, Trivial Pursuit, checkers, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Twister, and numerous card games. Our parents found that games could keep us entertained for hours. I have many fond memories of games with family and friends.

My best friend's sister taught me Parcheesi when I was in 3rd grade, and it instantly became my favorite game. We must have played it every weekend for years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane once again KGM!

Hah yes! @Teodora V _Warsaw Dynamics_, @Kris Klima _K15t_

Čovječe, ne ljuti se! - That's the name of the game in Croatia. 😄 We played it a lot, although I can say, as a kid, I wouldn't stay that calm if I were to lose 😅

These days, I always bring board games when I go to my parents' place. My sister still lives with them, and we tend to do one game night while I'm there 🎲
We do play everything - from Catan, Dixit, Game of Life, Monopoly (we do have like 3 versions atm, hah), Yamb, Tower Game, etc.

I do need to upgrade my Catan collection and buy the expansions, but the problem is I have an English version/model (wooden figurines), and I cannot find these versions anywhere but in the UK, and this shipping from there is mad 🫠
Anyway, if anyone has any info/insights about that, feel free to share!

  • The Game of Life
  • Payday
  • and when we were quite young, Candyland and Chutes & Ladders

@Trudy Claspill yes! We also had Candyland and Chutes & Ladders. By the time my younger brothers came along, it was well worn.

remember playing different version of Monopoly — we used to call it Business — during childhood summer breaks.

During summers, carrom was also quite popular, if a carrom board qualifies as a board game. Ludo and Scotland Yard were some of the other favourites too.

These days, we are playing a lot of Monopoly again, and the recent favourite is Monopoly Deal, the card game version of Monopoly.

That would be MonopolyLevensweg (The Game of Life) and Mens Erger Je Niet (Ludo).

@Rishabh Jhawar Thank you for bringing carrom back to mind. We loved our carrom board!

My earliest memories are of Ludo (in German, "Mensch ärgere dich nicht") and, later, of Rommé (the card game) with my grandparents and the whole family.
