Throwback Thursday: Fun sports event you've been to #TBT

It's Thursday!

My son used to ride Motocross back in Iceland. During that time, we would watch all things related to dirt bikes.

Seven years ago, and many years since the above picture was taken, we find ourselves in Utah and Supercross is coming! So we purchased couple of tickets and attended the event. It was a blast! So much fun. And we also really liked walking the exhibition / pit area. Now that I am writing about it, I want to go again :)

Soooo, what fun sports event you've been to recently or long time ago?
Let’s make it a great Thursday!

I won a trip to Miami for a NASCAR race at Homestead Motor Speedway. We had pit passes for before the race, so we were able to see some of the behind the scenes stuff at the racetrack.

Those cars get loud!  Renting the headsets so you can listen to the in car stuff was interesting.

Little did we know that parking up front to be closer to the entrance meant that it would take 3 hours to get out of the parking lot when the night was over!

2002 NHL Playoffs, Game 4, Toronto Maple Leafs vs. New York Islanders @ Nassau Coliseum. 4/24/2002

Score tied 3-3 with 2:38 left when Alexei Yashin fires a pass from the defensive zone to spring Shawn Bates on a breakaway. Brian McCabe comes from behind and trips Bates before he can get a shot off on Curtis Joseph, and the referee immediatly signals a penalty shot with 2:32 left on the game clock.

The air in the arena was tense, not a single breath released from the fans, as Bates circled the puck and picked it up at center ice, revving his engine for a mano-a-mano with CuJo. As he plows into the zone, dips his right shoulder to deke, and fires the puck over the goaltender's shoulder into the back of the net, there was a single second of silence before the loudest sonic boom of applause and cheering I had ever heard in my life.

They gave out rally towels to all of the fans that night. 16,000 towels were being waved around furiously. The air was thick with lint!

I would cough up lint balls for the next 24 hours.

But that electricuting feeling of the entire rink exploding in unison still rings in my ears today.

Way back in 1996, I went to a night of drag racing at the Lebanon Valley Speedway near Albany, NY. It was loud, exciting, and the exhaust fumes gave me a rather large headache!

Haven't been big on going to sport events (or I guess spending a lot to go to them) but since we live in a college town I do get swept up into home games (e.g. traffic, partying, loud music, etc). It's funny since our church is located right in downtown just a couple blocks from the university on game days the mix of heavy metal outside with classical music inside always gives me a laugh.

The last time I went to a game was back in 2015 :O when our office had a few extra suite tickets for a Detroit Pistons (basketball) game. This was when they were somewhat decent lol.

Not recently, but I love going to Speedways / Racetracks (like NASCAR events).  It's not so much WATCHING the race (cars running around in circles isn't that entertaining for me) but rather the sound.  Something about the hum it soothing.  🚗🏎  Went to the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis years ago - it was unbelievable.  Super loud, super fun!!  There was a spectacular lightening storm afterwards.  Great day!

We were boring this year.  Before my wife and I had kids we were season ticket holders to the Guelph Storm (local Hockey Team).

However, last year, we took the kids with some friends to see a monster truck rally.  It was much louder than I was expecting, but it was a ton of fun!

Baseball World Series 2013 Game 6

The Red Sox beat out the Cardinals to win the title.  I remember walking out of the park and looking down the street at a sea of people washing over the streets.  You couldn't see anything besides people in any direction.

It was very surreal and then I wondered "how am I going to get home..."  Very cool experience

My favorite sporting event was probably seeing the Green Bay Packers play (American) football at home. Lambeau Field is pretty magical in-person. I don't really care too much about keeping up with their stats or anything regularly, but it was a pretty amazing experience!

I am not a sports nut but historically I have enjoyed college basketball and football. When in college (North Carolina State) my favorite sport was basketball and was often court-side watching some of the best including Jordan. Though he was on the opposing UNC side it was amazing to watch. I graduated the year the Jim Valvano's team won the national championship which was amazing to experience.

Commenting from India, so more of than not, things are going to be about cricket!
During its initial years the Indian Premier League (IPL) was indeed a 'rage'. I had been to one such match between Deccan Chargers (DC) & Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). What an amazing experience to watch international players who play for different nations, playing in the same team. I remember 'David Warner' (Australis - DC) exploding in the middle during the 1st innings and followed by Chris Gayle (West Indies - RCB) bring his own 'gayle' storm of sixes in the 2nd innings.
Truly was an awesome experience!

I absolutely love Roller Derby. I attended one bout about 8 years ago and the very next bout I went to, my friend asked me to volunteer to help out. I went back again, and she asked me to be the head volunteer. This is how I ended up being the head non-skating official for three different teams for 6 years and being on the board of directors of one team for two years.

Roller derby is an amazing sport. It is athletics, strategy and courage. There is both women's and men's teams in my area. It is a totally different game between the two. The men are more physical hits and speed skating. The women are more strategy and team formation. It is so cool to watch them work out how to keep the Jammer from scoring points.

Derby is like hockey, speed skating, rugby and soccer all at once without a ball or puck. There is so much physical endurance and skill required to perform at the top state level teams. There are a ton of local leagues around which will start you out learning the game and the skating skills you need if you are interested in the sport.

When I found derby I found my community. These were fun people who were open and welcoming and non-conforming. These people were so accepting of everyone who wanted to join, be it a skater, a volunteer, or a fan. What a great community of people.

Lacrosse. Definitely lacrosse. They run like it's soccer, hit harder then hockey or American football, and can throw the ball at 130-140 mph. It never stops.
