Travel Tuesday: Sarajevo 🇧🇦

I have travelled quite a lot, and one thing I always find interesting is how some cities stay in your memory for reasons you did not expect.

That is why I wanted to start a small Travel Tuesday discussion series — not only about places, but also about the impressions they leave.

For the first post, I chose Sarajevo.

Sarajevo surprised me because of the contrast. The city has a deep and difficult history, and you can still feel that in some places. But at the same time, the city feels alive, warm and full of energy.

What left the strongest impression on me was how both the people and the location appeared to have bounced back and moved on. While there's history, there's also daily life, warmth, activity, and optimism.

And of course, great, awesome food.😁

I also enjoyed seeing the Sarajevo ’84 Olympic history. It was a nice reminder that sport, culture and city identity can stay connected long after an event is over.

For me, Sarajevo was not only a city to visit. It was a city that made me think.

My question for you: Which city surprised you the most during your travels — and why?

Wow, Sarajevo looks nice, I must go there sometime

I was always very reticent about going to Paris, it was always bashed online about how dirty it is, or how rude the locals are.

A few years ago, I got the opportunity to travel there, and it was beyond expectations, and I enjoyed my time there.

Hmm, I have to say, I can compare Paris in 2005 with Paris in 2026, and in my opinion, it has changed for the worse.

Beautiful photos, thanks for sharing @Arkadiusz Wroblewski

My biggest surprise recently was Santorini - I knew it would be beautiful, but I had heard that it was too busy and figured that the crush of tourists would ruin the experience, so I was looking forward to other parts of my Greece trip instead. When I actually got there, it just blew me away in every respect and I would go back there in a heartbeat.

Santorini is still on my list to do.

Actually, Greece in December is beautiful and quite warm.

I did a 15-day Italy/Greece/Turkey cruise in 2015. I also loved Santorini and was sad that we were only there for the day.

Nice topic @Arkadiusz Wroblewski and beautiful photos of Sarajevo. I'd like to visit this city one day! :)

The city that really impressed me is Florence. I didn't expect that I would like that city so much, and the food (as I'm not a big fan of Italian cuisine). Florence is the city I really like returning to :)

@Arkadiusz Wroblewski - Bucharest!

I had no idea what to expect, and I was totally charmed by its coffee scene.

I can't wait to go back, maybe this year...

I think that Amsterdam surprised me the most on my first visit there. My colleague who went with me for the day spent the day keeping me from falling over into the street as I walked looking up at the dates on the houses. The walls of most houses meet up with the ones next to them, and I was trying to figure out how they built a house in 1741 between a house from 1592 and one from 1639.
