🚫 Automation rules in Trello
Trello automations couldn’t be converted into Jira automations. Instead, you can manually document the automation rules and recreate them in Jira using Jira's automation capabilities.
Before moving your team’s Trello content to Jira, we highly recommend doing some “house cleaning” first to ensure all the information you plan to move is well-organized so that you could have a clean start in Jira from Day 1! Below are some best practices we recommend to follow:
Delete/archive unused cards
Delete/archive old boards
Consolidate lists/cards from multiple boards into one single board
Each Trello board is equivalent to a Jira project. When migrating, we recommend keeping the total number of Trello boards below 15,000. Exceeding this threshold may lead to performance issues during the migration process.
If feasible, migrate a small portion of the cleaned up Trello data to a Jira sandbox instance to test it out before transporting the all these data to a Jira production environment. This step will help you identify potential migration related issues early on.
For detailed instructions on setting up a Jira sandbox instance, please consult this article: Create a sandbox.
There are two ways to initiate data transfer from Trello to Jira:
Import directly from Jira’s import tool
Jira has its own import tool, with a friendly UI to guide through the importing process directly from Trello. This article provides a step-by-step guidance: Import data from Trello.
Export from Trello first, then import to Jira
Trello allows you to export boards in JSON or CSV format. JSON exports include more detailed information than CSV, such as comments and custom fields. Once exported, you can adjust the information using tools like Excel or a JSON editor to make it more suitable for import into Jira. We have more detailed information here: Export data from Trello.
If both options sound overwhelming to you, alternatively, you could hire someone professional to do it for you. Here is a list of our trained partners with the tools and expertise to better assist you with this migration.
Now that you have all the data you need in Jira, you could start managing your projects in a more structured way over there. You’ll find Jira has a familiar board view as Trello does, as well as many more exciting project management features, such as Summary Dashboard (for a project overview) and Forms (to automate your information intake process)!
Just because your team is starting to use Jira, it doesn't mean you have to say goodbye to Trello. There are plenty use cases where we believe using Jira and Trello together would turbocharge your team’s productivity. Check this article to see when to leverage each tool for optimal results.
