My thoughts on Beta

I like that Comments and Activity is now on the right side. It makes it faster and easier to access when I need to check it.

What I find limiting:

  • There’s no shortcut to quickly toggle Comments and Activity.
  • When I’m in a board and want to switch to another board in the same workspace, I miss the old left sidebar menu. It used to be possible to open it with a shortcut and select directly between boards. Now I have to click “B” and then use the mouse to select the right tab, because it defaults to “Everything”.
  • I mark myself as a member on my most important cards. either because of due dates or because I want to keep them in mind. When Trello opens, I land on My Cards, and that helps me see those key cards.
Problem: the layout is not ideal. Half of the screen is used for something else, and only a few cards are visible at first glance. If I have, say, 8 cards marked, I can’t see all of them without scrolling.
  • It would be helpful to have a shortcut to activate the card filter in My Cards window.
  • It would also help a lot to be able to group My Cards by board.

@Maula- The side by side view you refer to is only available to a certain group of users - I would really like to see it as I have a hunch I would prefer that as an option.

Quite a few others (including myself) have expressed an opinion about the board (and lists) accessibility, now they're effectively hidden on that little tool island.

I've found a couple of workarounds that help me overcome those shortcomings.

Firstly, easily accessed boards.

  • This is easy to do by taking advantage of the new 'inbox' feature, using it as a 'holding' area to hold links to the boards you need access to.
  • Copy & paste the Board URL into a new card and it will appear as a dynamic card (showing a thumbnail state of the board)
  • Then simply drag that into the inbox, where it will persist.

Next up, My Cards shortcut

  • If you setup the default view to be the home view (I'm not sure how to do this, I think it is default as standard) - then use Command + D (on a mac, PC might be different) and you will get to see all your items, your 'up next's' and 'highlights'
  • I also use two instances of trello on one display, the windows can be manipulated so that I've effectively got a very slim column on the left that displays my items at all times, the remaining section of the monitor is my main trello board view.

You also asked card filters

  • As far as I know, there are no shortcuts, but these have been hidden quite well in the beta interface.
  • See this thread for more info.

HTHs. :)

About the side view:

I like it because when you're working in the description field or on a checklist, and want to write something in the comments or activity section, you have it right there at the sid, you don’t need to scroll all the way down.

Now I wonder if it might be even more useful to have the checklist at the side instead of the comments and activity. One thing’s clear: I definitely like having something on the side.

About the board url thing:

Very interesting, although I'm not sure it would help me, since I’ve already marked my top boards as favorites and memorized which “Ctrl + (number)” each one uses. I just press those hotkeys to access them without having to open them manually. I go up to Ctrl + 5, so I’m aware of my five most frequently used boards and assign those shortcuts accordingly.

Now, if I wanted to emulate the old left-hand panel showing all boards from the same workspace as the current board, it wouldn’t really work because if I’m in a different workspace, I’d still see boards from others, and I think it would get cluttered quickly. But I’ll give it a try and see how it goes. Also, each board url card take a lot of space.

About the "Home view" vs "My card" view:

Yeah, I get you, but the issue is that the view in “My cards” is just better each card appears on a single row, which makes it easier to see everything and get a quick overview.

Cheers !! :D
