Can We Talk About All Our "Homes" Now?

For newer users, the conceptual difference between your "Boards View" and the "Workspace Boards View" might be a bit confusing.

Certainly, when you have no other spaces (yet), those will overlap significantly.

But working in the Beta, the new "Board Switcher" made me realize there's now even more to it. Makes me question where is "Home"?

And why do none of these homes have the Planner or Inbox?

Trello has great flexibility and if you are familiar with it, you probably won't be bothered much, however, looking closely it does get peculiar.

I'm listing a few examples below, but tell me

  • how consciously you navigate these
  • how you do get lost?

Do you feel this works, and think the naming convention here makes sense?

First there's the view called Home

Home.png

It's a real home across your spaces, listing a mix of comments, checklists and assignments.

Wherever you start from it takes you to the home URL at

https://trello.com/

It also has a sidebar of Workspaces and one for Boards. A mini-Switcher, really. Very sensible.

Still, it's not a complete overview in my opinion, and I'm not sure I'm not missing assignments or tasks here.

(It's summer break, so not a lot might be going on here for me.)

Plus: there used to be a similar view for your space, but that has apparently disappeared or they've been combined.

Surely this would be the place to start from and also have Planner/Inbox access?

Then there's your "Workspace Home" according to its URL:

https://trello.com/w/your-workspace/home

But it's called "Boards", i.e. the relevant workspace boards.

It's similar to your "User Home" via:

https://trello.com/u/me/boards

They're both fundamentally different, with one showing boards in that space, the other across spaces, which makes sense.

Edit: actually, no: it redirects to your username/me/boards--so both offer the same. Confuse!.

Finally there's your other "Workspace Home" also called Boards:

https://trello.com/w/yourworkspace/

but is actually your Collections...

Note that this is actually the one also accessible through Switcher > Settings > Boards. I'm not convinced how a view is a setting though, but since it's accessible through the Switcher, it's now a boards Home too.

To me this now is getting somewhat confusing, and what bothers me is that with all of these, there's no real central navigation hub for them.

The URLs use 'home' a lot, but a lot of navigation headers say it's boards.  You'd expect a real Home to be just that, or at least for the new Switcher to address this.

Do explain where I'm wrong here, or what I've left out.

Since the Beta is still not frozen and rolled-out officially, chances are this might still change overnight.

I do need to start getting familiar with a steady beta, before all our users are getting it and I need to explain this.

@Nils Geylen at this moment I can admit the inconsistencies and the fact that all these "Homes" will need to get better. Inbox and Planner would be great to have at the main "Home" surface.

I would recommend to go first with Board Switcher, where you can search for a board, navigate to starred or recent boards, browse workspaces.
