Unlocking Advanced JQL: Where Did You Start?

Mastering JQL (Jira Query Language) is a game changer for anyone working with Jira, but getting beyond the basics can feel overwhelming. I wanted to kick off a thread for anyone looking to level up their JQL skills, and share some of the best starting points I’ve found for learning advanced JQL.

If you’re ready to go deeper with JQL, here are two resources I highly recommend:

Atlassian’s YouTube Advanced JQL Course
YouTube Playlist: Advanced JQL

Appfire’s “Essential Spellbook” Article
The Essential Spellbook for Advanced JQL

Both are packed with practical examples and cover some of those “hidden” tricks that aren’t obvious from the basic docs.

My own approach:
I started learning advanced JQL by taking real team challenges—like tricky reporting or filtering needs—and then searching for ways to solve them, either through these guides or right here in the community. Every “aha!” moment built my confidence to try something new.

Now over to you:

  • How did you break through to the next level with JQL?
  • Are there any tips, use cases, or resources that helped you master advanced queries?
  • What’s the query you’re proudest of building?

Looking forward to your stories, strategies, and favorite resources!

My first “Aha!” moment was realizing that JQL results are always issues (work items).

My favorite use of JQL is checking for empty values and custom field IDs - I add a column to the view and filter by that column (filter up, down and once again!).

One advanced insight I have is that apps can define their own custom JQL functions. This was a game changer in one of my previous company’s apps.
