đź’ˇJira views, explained: When to use List, Calendar, and Timeline views

If you’re new to Jira and not sure which view is right for your work, this Atlassian Answered episode on Jira views is a great place to start:

Once you’ve watched, jump into your own project and try these views for different scenarios:

📋 List view: your “worktable” for fast edits

Use List view when you want to:

  • Scan and sort all your work in one place

  • Update lots of issues quickly (assignee, status, priority, etc.)

  • Build a focused list of “things I’m responsible for.”

If you like spreadsheets, List view will feel very natural.

📆 Calendar view: when dates really matter

Use Calendar view when:

  • You’re tracking due dates or SLAs

  • You want to see what’s coming up this week or month

  • You’re coordinating work around launches, campaigns, or events

It’s perfect for spotting busy days and date collisions at a glance.

⏳ Timeline view: seeing the bigger picture

Use Timeline view when you need to:

  • Map work across weeks or months

  • See how tasks and epics relate over time

  • Communicate a simple roadmap to your stakeholders

Timeline helps you understand not just what you’re doing, but how it all fits together.

After watching the video, open a project and:

  1. Try List, then Calendar, then Timeline on the same set of issues.

  2. Notice which view helps you most with what you’re working on today.

Then come back and share in the comments:
Which view clicked for you, and how are you using it in your team? We'd love to know!
