Jira & Xray: where to find Coverage Settings (to ignore requirements with specific label)?

Jan Lagerpusch June 5, 2025

I'm looking for a way to exclude specific issues from xray coverage analysis.

Example: Spike User Stories do not require any tests, so they should not count as "uncovered".

While the Xray documentation mentions this on the page Coverage Settings , this menu item / option is not shown in the project settings of my projects.

Interestingly, on another page of the xray documentation, that menu entry also is not visible.

Any suggestions on that? Has the functionality been removed? If so, what would be the preferred way to handle such User Stories (beside using a different issue type for them)?

Best,
Jan

I had this checked by our jira administrator again and there is indeed a screen "Requirement Coverage" in the global xray settings where this can be done!

Have a look at the screenshot - we have configured a label called "test-ignore-coverage".

Putting this label to an issue that is of the "coverable" type, this leads to

  1. not displaying the coverage status field anymore for this issue
  2. not counting this issue for default coverage reports etc.

Cool!

Would you mind directing us to that screen? I can't seem to find it, at least in Cloud 😣

Hi @Jan Lagerpusch and welcome to the community!

Glad to see you decided to reach out.

The "test coverage" option should be easily accesible in your instance. Would you mind adding some screencaps to see how thing look from your POV? Make sure you go into Project settings -> addons -> Xray 😊

The functionality is still available and maintained (I just checked it in the Cloud version of the app) so let's see what you can see and we will see what we can do about it (sry for the pun)

Hi @Jaime Escribano and thank you for your quick reply!

Please have a look at the screenshot - this is coming from the project settings. There is no "Coverage Settings" entry - only "Requirement Coverage", but this does not contain the options to configure labels to be ignored etc.

Hope that helps?

Hi again @Jan Lagerpusch

I'm sorry, there was a confusion from my side. The "Requirements Coverage" menu is available but "label exclusion" is not available in the Cloud either.

I've talked to my senior coleague at knowmad mood who has been working in Xray for years and he was surprised to read that documentation existed.

Excluding by label hasn't been supported for as long as he has worked with Xray, so i'm afraid the only real way of implementing your requirement is using a different issue type.

I'm sorry for the confusion!

Regards,

Jaime

Oh, quick note, you can exclude by label in reports if at the end of the day that's what you care for.

Only a bandaid, but it's something

@Jaime Escribano thank you for the update! Yes, I see it can be excluded in the reports - and I guess the same goes for the filters that are used for Gadgets/Dashboards.

So, the way forward would be:

  1. define a project-wide Label to be used (such as "ignore-coverage") and communicate to all project members
  2. create JQL for filters and reports to exclude issues carrying that label

Thanks for clarifying!

Jan

No problem m8, sorry I couldn't be of further assistance.

If you would be so kind, could you mask my answer as Accepted so that it may help others searching for similar questions in the future?

Thanks and have a lovely day!
