How to build an automation rule to create a linked task in Jira based on the issue type

suzanne_moss May 1, 2025

Hi all,

Im very new to Jira (and quite frankly a little scared of it!), anyhoo. For those that have braved the steep Jira learning curve, if you could help a gal out that would be so much appreciated.

I want to create an automation rule that does this...

WHEN JSM work item created
IF the issue type is not 'Critical issue'
THEN create a linked issue in the Jira cloud project

The trouble I'm having is that I don't see a 'Then' action for 'Create Linked Issue'.

If anyone can help i'd be super grateful. TIA

Suz

Hello @suzanne_moss

If you are new to Jira I recommend that you visit the Learning area (link at the top of the Community pages) to find the free, on-demand training courses available for Jira products. The have courses for different knowledge levels (i.e. beginner) and a variety of topics, include Automation Rules.

There is no action named "THEN".

You simply add the actions after the 'IF'. The "then" is implied.Screenshot 2025-05-01 at 7.37.24 AM.pngScreenshot 2025-05-01 at 7.37.45 AM.pngScreenshot 2025-05-01 at 7.38.05 AM.png

You will need to add the Linked Issues field in your Create Work Item action to create a link between the new issue and the issue that triggered the rule.
