Timeline dates are so rigid, cant edit or change the view

Adil Sheikh August 6, 2025

I really like the idea of the new "Today" line. It's a valuable addition in theory, but in practice it's created some challenges due to how timeline dates work in Jira Product Discovery.

Because timeline-view project start and end times are so rigid, I’ve been using milestone labels to reflect our 2-week sprint cadence instead. It’s a bit of a workaround, and the milestone dates don’t always align perfectly with the calendar. That was manageable until the "Today" line appeared.

Now that it can’t be hidden, it highlights the misalignment between our sprint structure and the timeline view, which adds confusion.

Top requests:

Allow dragging project start and end dates to specific days. Even better would be supporting a custom sprint length (such as 2 weeks) and a configurable start date.

If that’s not feasible in the short term, please make the "Today" line optional. I do like the feature, but right now it is making an imperfect setup more confusing.

Hi @Adil Sheikh and welcome to the Community!

Are you sure your question is about Jira Product Discovery? JPD is about managing your product backlog (the ideas, the strategic priorities), while the targeted tool for tracking your delivery is Jira (Software).

If you want to track delivery work in detail, I do recommend using the boards, timeline views and plans in Jira instead of JPD instead.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the welcome! Yes — I’m definitely referring to Jira Product Discovery (JPD).

We're using JPD exactly as intended — to manage our idea backlog, prioritization, and planning work, not execution/delivery. However, we’re also leveraging the Timeline view in JPD to visualize how those ideas align with our product roadmap and sprints.

The issue I highlighted is not about tracking delivery work in Jira Software. It’s about how the "Today" line in JPD's Timeline view now creates visual misalignment for teams like ours who use milestone-based sprint markers (instead of strict project dates).

This is purely a visual/UX friction inside JPD — and we still find the Timeline view helpful for stakeholder discussions and high-level planning. We’re just looking for a bit more flexibility, like:

  • Hiding the Today line (or making it optional)
  • Allowing project timelines to align better with sprint rhythms
  • Supporting custom planning cadences (like biweekly sprints)

Happy to share a screen or open a feature request if it helps clarify! But yes, this is firmly within the scope of JPD usage.

You can definitely see if you could raise a feature request for it, @Adil Sheikh. But I do know that the JPD team tries to clearly differentiate between the product and delivery backlogs and sees them (I think rightfully) as different concepts serving different goals.

Since sprints really are artefacts belonging to the delivery aspect of work (they can be managed, visualised and tracked with the delivery roadmap inside a plan), I would be surprised to see them being introduced in the JPD timeline.

That aside, being able to show/hide the today line is a standalone request that you could definitely raise as something on its own, regardless of the sprint alignment.
