Recent change to Epic Icon in JPD

Jack Wilkins
June 23, 2026

Recently, I've noticed that the classic purple lightning bolt icon Screenshot 2026-06-23 161550.png , used in other JIRA apps to signify an epic, has been replaced with a multiline star symbol icon Screenshot 2026-06-23 162059.png.  In addition, the legacy icon no longer appears in the palette.

Does anyone know why this change was made?
Was there any prior communication or notification about it?

Hello and Welcome to Atlassian Community @Jack Wilkins

There was a Cloud Changes note about this back in May (“Updated icons for idea types”). Atlassian essentially refreshed the JPD icon library so admins can better distinguish between different idea types like Opportunities, Solutions, or Experiments.

You can check out the new options under Project settings → Types and workflows.

It was rolled out around 18 may.

Sadly, this change breaks continuity with our broader implementation of icons in JIRA.  This change now requires that we support two standards for visual cues referencing epics and features.

Ideally, rather than replace the orginal icons the JPD team would have added to the set of supported icons.
