JPD and JQL

Brian Pearcy

JQL doesn't seem to be formatting things properly for JPD items like Project Start and Project Target.

Example result: {"start":"2026-01-01","end":"2026-01-31"} for Project start.

Should be January 1st, 2026

There seems to be a lot of missing functionality with JPD and JQL.  Like creating view with JQL.

Hi @Brian Pearcy

What problem are you trying to solve?  That is, "why do this?"  Knowing that may help the community suggest alternatives.  Until we know that...

Jira Product Discovery (JPD) uses its own date format, different from the date or date-time picker for other spaces.  The JPD format allows selecting a single date, a range, or a quarter, it is a JSON expression stored as text, and thus the JPD date format is not supported by JQL searches yet.

When you need to search / filter on Ideas in a JPD space by date, some workarounds include:

  • use a view within JPD to filter / sort the items
  • export the items to a spreadsheet for parsing / filtering
  • use an automation rule or other mechanism capable of parsing the field

Kind regards,
Bill

@Bill Sheboy that is how it displays when I show the column.  I think they need to fix the formatting.

JPD filters don't provide enough control.  Also, why can I use for JQL for JPD if it isn't going to work?

Yes, I agree with your concerns: better JQL support and UX display are needed for this field type outside of JPD features.

Improving this handling is noted as "up next" on the JPD roadmap for item JPR-29:
