I would like to create an additional custom field on Jira. Is this possible?
Hi @Natalie Keane , thanks for your question.
Yes, it is possible to create custom fields in the free version of Jira. You do need to be a product admin.
If you see this gear icon here, in the upper right,
you need to choose from the menu, Issues, then on the left, Fields, Custom Fields and you should be able to create a new custom field and enable it to the context where you want to use it.
If you have other questions or doubts, please write again here.
Cheers
Hello again @Natalie Keane , sorry, I just realized you were asking about Jira Product Discovery. In any case, yes, you can create custom fields also here in the free version.
From the All ideas view, I clicked on the + at the end of columns to 'Add a field'.
Here it is possible to add a field that already exists or as I am doing here, just start typing to create a new custom field and then you can choose the type of field.
I hope this helps you. Thanks for your patience.
Cheers

Thank you. Is this possible to do if I'm not set up as the admin for the product?

Hi @Natalie Keane , it depends if you're taking about Jira or Jira Product Discovery. For Jira, you need to be a product admin to configure global custom fields. If you're working with team-managed projects, you don't need to be a product admin.
For Jira Product Discovery, you don't need to be a product admin to create custom fields. https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/product-discovery/guides/getting-started/user-roles-permissions

Thank you so much for your help. Although I am struggling slightly, as my Home view isn't the same. When i click on 'settings' I just get 'Account settings, personal jira settings or user management.' There isn't anywhere that I can create the custom field. If I select 'create' it just brings up an individual project and the option to create an issue. I'd be grateful for any guidance. Thanks, Natalie

Hi @Natalie Keane , thanks for your reply. It sounds like you are not a product admin, which you need to be to create a custom field in Jira.
If you are a product admin, you should have this gear icon to the left of your icon. It sounds like you can only amend your personal profile.
Is there anyone else in your organization who can help you? or who might be able to elevate your permissions?
Cheers

Thank you for your help. I've checked and i am 'user admin' rather than 'org admin' does that make a difference? Can only one person be 'org admin'?

Hi @Natalie Keane , thanks for your reply.
User admins are different because, as the name suggests, you can manage users but not the product of Jira.
A product admin in Jira can see the menu I indicated in my screen, where you should be able to create custom fields, modify workflows, etc.
You don't have to be an org admin to be a product admin in Jira.
Sorry, this is kind of a mess with all the anonymising but basically, this is a user in one of my test instances. They are enabled, in the top section here to the Jira product as a user and as the Jira Administration product as a Product admin. You can show this to whoever is managing your instance to say, you don't necessarily need to be an org admin to make configuration changes in Jira. To do this, you just need to be a Jira product admin.
I hope this helps you.
Cheers
