📣 Feature improvement - introducing more granular admin permissions in Jira Product Discovery

Hi Jira Product Discovery Community!

We’re excited to announce the first milestone of our journey to deliver more granular admin permissions while creating custom roles in Jira Product Discovery. This update is a direct response to feedback from our enterprise customers and admins who need greater control and flexibility when managing projects at scale.

Why Granular Permissions?

As Jira Product Discovery adoption grows within larger organizations, we’ve heard that the current “all-or-nothing” admin role can be limiting. Admins often face a tough choice: either lock down admin rights (and become a bottleneck for every change) or delegate full admin access (and risk unwanted changes to workflows, fields, or project settings).

With more granular permissions, we’re aiming to:

• Empower admins to delegate specific responsibilities (like managing people or fields) without giving away the keys to the whole project.
• Reduce friction and support Jira Product Discovery's growth across teams and departments.
• Lay the groundwork for even more enterprise-ready controls in the future.

What’s new?

In this first milestone, we’re introducing the ability to separate some key admin actions. While not every permission is split out yet, you’ll now see options to delegate responsibilities such as:

• manage workflows - creating, editing and deleting workflows and workflows steps
• manage space fields and work types - creating, editing and deleting fields and work types
• copy space - using space as a template when creating a new space (using its existing configuration)
• manage watchers
• edit reporters

You can find these new options in your space’s manage roles settings. Here’s a sneak peek at the updated interface:

Thank you for the information about this feature. 

Quick question: To which license levels will this new feature apply?  The text only states this "update is a direct response to feedback from our enterprise customers".  As Jira Product Discovery (JPD) already has a separate licensing model from Jira, wouldn't it make sense to provide granular permissions for all non-Free license levels?

And as a tip: I respectfully recommend always noting the impacted products and license levels with new feature announcements.  That type of honesty will better align with Atlassian's core values: https://www.atlassian.com/company/values

Creating custom roles and selecting more granular permissions are available for all non-free license levels.
