Why is it impossible for Confluence to keep Heading styles as shown - numbering breaks everything!

We’re experiencing consistent issues when attempting to apply numbering to headings in Confluence pages.

While creating or editing content, I can start fresh and reapply heading styles multiple times, but enabling numbering on headings causes significant formatting problems. Specifically:

• Applying numbering breaks existing heading formatting
• Heading sizes and styles are altered unexpectedly
• Fonts are changed (often to Times New Roman)
• The displayed heading formatting does not match what is selected in the editor menu

Additionally, this issue has retroactively impacted existing content:

• Previously working pages have lost all heading numbering
• Documents now reference numbered headings that no longer exist, causing inconsistencies and confusion

Impact:

This is significantly impacting productivity and document reliability:

• Considerable time is spent reformatting content
• Documentation integrity is compromised due to broken references
• Lack of consistent styling makes content difficult to maintain and standardize

Expected Behaviour:

• Heading numbering should not alter font, size, or style unexpectedly
• Formatting applied via the editor should persist accurately
• Existing pages should retain previously applied heading numbering
• The editor should reflect heading styles exactly as they appear in the document

Questions / Clarification:

• Is there a known issue with heading numbering affecting formatting?
• Are there recommended approaches or workarounds to ensure numbering and styles remain consistent?
• How can we enforce a stable, reusable heading style that persists across pages?

Is 2026 and feels like MSWord all over again!

Formatting on the on-prem Confluences has never been ideal and it can get really bad really soon if one copy - pastes content into Confluence editor from other resources - this introduces alien HTML elements and wrecks the page. That's why I love Cloud editor so much :D 

Having said that... Can you simply type a number to a heading manually without applying a style?

This would not introduce the numbering HTML container to the entire page hence giving you more freedom to apply style in between the headings.

Thanks Kris, I’ve rebuilt the page three times from scratch—avoiding any copy/paste—and the issue persists each time. While manually typing numbering for headings does work, it’s not really a sustainable solution for what we need from Atlassian.

It’s frustrating to see such significant investment in things like Formula 1 sponsorships, while relatively small improvements could be made to address fundamental issues in the Atlassian product suite.

Hi Stavros - thank you for the response, in our enterprise environment no Marketplace or third party apps permitted, we can only consider default functionality.
