I am left with compressed content in the middle of the page that cannot be left justified. I have to revert to an old version making it impossible to edit the page. This is a new behaviour. How do I get around it ? Is it a defect.
Worked it out. Borders can be stretched.

You can set the entire page's width to Narrow/Wide/Max or you can play with individual elements and stretch them independently - images, tables.

Glad you found a great solution!
For anyone else landing here: Confluence Cloud's native Narrow/Wide/Max page width setting controls the overall content column, and individual elements (tables, images) can be stretched beyond that container through the element toolbar; that's what Kris described so well above.
If you ever want more granular control over how content is structured across a page, not just stretching individual elements, but defining full visual sections, backgrounds, and multi-column layouts without fighting the column constraint .. a dedicated formatting app is worth exploring.
