What is the official markup type of a Confluence documentation space?  Is it markdown?  Or is using markdown just an option?

I am writing a statement of work for converting written .docx documentation to a Confluence documentation space and need to be very specific.

Hi Michael,

Most of what is displayed in Confluence is a Confluence storage format, which is an XHTML-based format. From our Confluence Markup page:

Advanced users can view the storage format of a page and even edit it, provided their Confluence site is configured to allow that.

Confluence also allows for Wiki Markup to be inserted into pages. See Confluence Wiki Markup for more details.

Let me know if you have any questions about any of this!

Regards,
Shannon
