What if I just want to edit text in a non-WYSIWYG fashion? I find the editor way too slow and too restrictive

Write it in a text editor, then paste it in.

Yes, as long as you've just used plain text.

If you've added any formatting, you'll need to copy it into a rich-text editor, make changes, and paste it back

I don't think this works anymore. I can't see a way of doing this.
