Switching from Server Confluence to Cloud Confluence - process and cost info

Radha D March 18, 2021

As I understand from the communication on your pages, new licenses have been stopped for Confluence Server from Feb 2, 2021. Support for the same will be discontinued from Feb 2024.

In this context, if our organisation has to convert their server license into Cloud, what is the procedure to follow?

How does it impact our information stored in Confluence server? Will this be made easier and smooth for us?

Is there some extra cost involved for switching from Server to Confluence?

Your clarification helps our organisation to consider the next possibilities.

Kind Regards,

Radha

So there's a couple minor problems with the concepts you've got here, but nothing huge, I'd llike to clarify some language/points:

New licences have been stopped, but if you have an existing Server, you can continue to renew and get support for it.  If timing is a concern, do not worry, you have plenty of time at the moment

You do not convert licences to Cloud.  Cloud is a subscription model, not a licence model.  When you move to Cloud, you'll buy it separately (but if you have a lot of Server licence time left over on your current support licence, there may be some room to use that to pay towards your first period of subscription - like if you migrated in the first 6 weeks after a Server renewal)

Confluence Cloud is rather different beast to Confluence Server, but there will not be huge changes to the information that you import.  You will see spaces and pages come in untouched - same structure, same text, same attachments etc.  Formatting may be a bit different.  It may be easier for you to use Cloud, but the only way to know is to try it out.

The cost of migration is "buy a new subscription to Cloud" + "your people's time to do the migration"

Thanks a lot Nic for taking time to clarify these questions.

Apart from cost factor, helpful to consider the benefits we might get. Kindly advise if a small organisation stands to gain from such migration.

Is there no one time support from Atlassian to do the migration for us in the beginning? If yes, is it expensive ( for about 100 licenses)?

One more related question: Continuing with our Confluence server, can we opt for cloud subscription for limited use ( 2-5)?

Example, documentation team might need so that they can use this with your third party product such as Scroll Viewport  by K15t.

I learnt from them that Scroll Viewport works better with Cloud version of Confluence.

Thanks and Kind Regards,

Radha

Atlassian will support your migration, but it's not real-time, you'll need to raise calls and wait for responses through the usual channels.  They recommend that if you want support (or even someone to do the whole lot for you), you get in touch with partners.

See https://www.atlassian.com/software/confluence/pricing for the baseline product, then https://marketplace.atlassian.com/ for any of the apps you are interested in.

@Radha D

You should go through this link to get details about how you can migrate from Confluence Server to Cloud:

https://support.atlassian.com/migration/docs/prepare-to-migrate-your-atlassian-server-products/

Regarding cost, the pricing of Server and Cloud licenses is different. Please check this link for more details on this: https://support.atlassian.com/migration/docs/compare-cloud-and-server/#CompareAtlassiancloudvsserver-Pricingandlicensing

Lastly, if you feel it may be difficult for you to perform this migration, you should take help from one of the Atlassian Solution Partners to assist you with this.
