Repeatable Content (e.g. Building Blocks)

Andrew C February 1, 2023

Hello, if you are familiar with Word, there is a way you can develop building blocks for reusing content. This would be different than an excerpt. It would be more akin to a template for specific content within a page. For example

Heading 1

  • List 1
  • List 2

<insert image here>

i would like to save the above and then reuse it within the same page without copying and pasting. Is this possible or can anyone recommend a specific confluence tool?

Appreciate guidance in advance

I'm afraid the templating functions in Confluence only goes to a page level, you can't template sections of a page.  I've not seen an app that can do it either.

I have seen people build separate pages from appropriate templates and then write a "long version" which is simply a bit of stuff around the main subject (a table of content, bit of metadata, overview summary, etc) and then have the rest of the page be a series of "include" macros for each section.  I think that may be the closest you can get.

Hi @Nic Brough -Adaptavist- sounds like something that is worth exploring. Quick question, can you clarify what "long version" means?

The trick is to take lots of small pages and aggregate them into a "long version".

As an example, create four pages:

  • Alice's page
    • Some stuff about Alice's work
  • Bob's page
    • Some stuff about Bob's work
  • Charlie's page
    • Some stuff about Charlie's work
  • Team page
    • {metadata}
    • {Table of content}
    • A quick intro to the team
    • {include Alice's page}
    • {include Bob's page}
    • {include Charlie's page}

Hi @Andrew C ,

You can try our app Content Template Macro for Confluence. With this app, you can create templates, limit them to spaces, and use them as page macros. In case of any questions, raise a request on our customer portal or ask here :)

Best regards,

Kate

EDIT:

Oh no. I read your question once again and noticed that you're looking for server solution :/ Unfortunately, our app is available only for cloud. I know that K15t is a leader of apps for Confluence. You can ask them directly.

Hello @Kate Pawlak _Appsvio_ appreciate the recommendation. This looks it would be a great addition to our tools. I would love to try this if it ever releases for the server version.

Thanks again!

Hello @Andrew C  ,

You can try Page Templates (https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/page-templates-296093785.html). It is possible to predefine text, some simple variables (also select lists). It is not possible to store image in template, bit you can use links to already attached images to existing pages.

Hello @Andrii Maliuta appreciate the recommendation. We are using this is several different ways. To clarify my question, we would need something more akin to @Kate Pawlak _Appsvio_ recommendation where we can use common pieces across different types of documents.

Thank you again!
