Remove single/multi column section from existing page without loosing content

Hi,
I have an existing page which is built/structured using single column sections. Now I want to get rid of these sections. I have tried to cut/paste the contents within a section and place it above/below the section, then try to delete the section as a whole. But that did not work.
The question is: How can I get rid of these sections without having to create a new Confluence page. Ideally, I want to keep page history as well.
Using Confluence 6.1.3.
