Quest Access to Confluence blocks access to articles in the self service portal

When giving a user guest access to a confluence space then I find that this user is no longer allowed to access knowledge articles via the self-service portal. The context here is that the space to which the guest user gets access is a different space from the space used for the self service portal. 

Guest can only have access to 1 space, and that blocks self-service portal access? anyone know how this works and if this is expected behavior our a bug? thanks
