Nested product requirements

Hello everyone,

I'm currently reviewing Confluence for use in my company, and I'd like to use it to manage requirements.

I'm trying to use the "Product requirements" blueprint. To use this feature, our product manager needs the ability to establish a hierarchy amongst requirements, some kind of nested, or parent/child requirements.
At the moment, all requirements are displayed in a "flat" way in the Requirements dashboard.

Also, is there a way to export a file, listing each detailed requirement (not only the product requirements dashboard) ?

Hello Augustin,

I agree with Ferenc. One of the best way we have to manage multiple levels of requirements is to create different custome fields for your requirements which qualify the requirements further (e.g. functional, mechanical, system, etc.) and also add relationship links between these requirements (issue links). You can create your own issue links to describe the dependencies even more.

Nuum provides a plugin called Impact for JIRA (http://bit.ly/1tYPzxu) which allows to display those dependencies, which may be what you are looking for.

I also suggest JIRA — especially if your requirements have stict ranking, strongly typed attributes (like business value, estimations) or complicated links (dependencies) that cannot be expressed simply by parent-child relationships.

If decide to try JIRA, here are 2 plugins to address the needs you mentioned.

Nesting: JIRA only supports 2 levels of hierarchies by default, but the Structure plugin fills the gap by alllowing hierarchies with arbitrary depth.

Exports: PDF View Plugin can render specification documents from your issues, together with their assets, mockups, diagrams or other type of attachments. (sample)
