Making Version Comment Field Mandatory in Confluence

Siva Kiran March 5, 2025

Hi Team,

Is it possible to make the version comment field mandatory on every update of a Confluence page?

I tried using an Automation rule in Confluence Cloud but couldn't find a way to achieve this. I then attempted to create a rule that would automatically add a comment on each update of the page when someone publishes it, with the comment format being "Version comment: updated by {{user.publicName}}", but unfortunately, this approach did not work.

Could you please assist me with this requirement?

Hi @Siva Kiran and welcome to the Community!

To my knowledge, there's no built-in way in Confluence Cloud to make version comments mandatory on every update. And even if there were, a dedicated versioning feature would be a better approach for keeping document updates structured.

If you're looking for a way to enforce this, you might want to check out Workflows for Confluence. It lets you set up approval steps and require things like version comments before a page gets published - so every update is properly documented.

Plus, Workflows creates official versions that are separate from Confluence’s native versioning, with setting up major and minor versioning, which makes it much more controllable, reliable for compliance and auditing purposes.

If you’d like to learn more, please feel free to book a demo here.

Hi @Yulia Lenina _AppFox_ :

Thanks for the update! :)

Unfortunately, we cannot install new plugins due to policy restrictions. However, we are working on a workaround using the built-in features.
