Location of Confluence Migration Assistant

Scott Scheidemantel July 20, 2021

All

We are migrating confluence from server to cloud. We have a cloud site.

Do we install the assistant on the Server side or the Cloud side?

Thanks

Scott

Hi @Scott Scheidemantel

you‘ll install the Migration Assistant on your Server instance.

If your Confluence Server site is version 6.13 or above you won't need to install anything because it comes pre-installed, although you may be asked to update the app.

  1. In Confluence Server go to Confluence configuration > Manage apps.
  2. Choose Find new add-ons
  3. Search for the Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant app.
  4. Choose Install and you're all set.

Once installed, you can access the migration assistant by going to Confluence Administration > look for the Atlassian Cloud category > select Migration Assistant.

Svenja

We have a very simple migration. Unfortunately we have never migrated anything and all of the upgrades have been done only to the server itself.

I have went thru the migration assistant and it states that it is about a 15 minute migration for all of our users and content.

I am concerned about what will happen if something goes wrong.

Does the migration just COPY the information from our server to the cloud or actually MOVE the content and users?

If something fails in the migration how do we recover the content?

Thanks

Scott

Hi @Scott Scheidemantel,

your content will be copied. If something goes wrong you'll get an error notification but you don't need to recover your content.

Are you using any apps on your instance? You might want to check if they have a migration path or if they are supported on Cloud. It could be that the content of the macros won't be formatted. If you're not using any apps/thid-party macros you should be fine.

Anyhow I recommend doing a full backup before migrating! This way you're on the safe side.

Kind regards,

Svenja
