Inserting Excerpt Macro seems to do nothing?

When I use the online guidance to select "Other Macros > Excerpt" and then insert, it seems to work but nothing happens. Some guidance suggests I should be prompted to name the excerpt, and to allow the toggle on of off of surrounding text but I don't get either. I can get Excerpt include to work, but of course its displays a blank because nothing on the source page has been "excerpted". Help please.

It should leave you with a placeholder in edit mode, with a box to put the content you want to tag as an excerpt. 

These macros don't get named, but once you have the placeholder box, there should be a box pop out with surrounding text options.

If the macro editor is just returning to an editing cursor with no placeholder at all, this usually means the macro function is broken somewhere.  The next step there is to read the log files on the server, at the time you try to add the macros to a page.
