How to Import a big Confluence Cloud backup into a another Cloud Site

I have a backup zip file of a Confluence Cloud site that has a size 7.9 Gb, and an XML file of 268 Mb.

When I try to import the backup into a new Confluence site, I get an error due to the XML file size and a broken link to "alternative methods".

I know now that the limit is 200 Mb, but when doing a google search, all I find are guides for migrating from self-hosted sites to the cloud version of confluence.

How can I import a cloud site backup of more than 200 MB, on another cloud site?

PD: The site from which the backup was taken, no longer exists.

This issue is still present, Atlassian can't be serious with 200MB import limit in 2026. Digging in the backup file and removing stuff is just as bad. On top of that the error message is now broken:

Thank you @Fabio Racobaldo _Catworkx_. Seems quite complicated, that's too bad.

Do you know how can I split the whole backup, into smaller spaces, that I can import one by one?

Hi @BernalCarlos ,

please take a look to the following article https://confluence.atlassian.com/cloudkb/migrating-from-confluence-cloud-to-confluence-cloud-691011969.html

Do you need to merge two different instances or restore the whole target instance?

I found a ticket in the Atlassian backlog https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-40449 resolved with "Won't fix" resolution.

Workaround

  • Reduce space size by curating and archiving older data into backups to meet compliance needs.
  • Break down larger spaces into smaller spaces that meet the ~200MB size limit for imports.

Hope this helps,

Fabio

hey @BernalCarlos , ufortunately you need to perform a full backup and then import one by one

Mmm... this is becoming way too hard, I'm trying to restore the backup on a local confluence instance, but I keep finding one problem after another, it looks like Attlasian doesn't care about this process at all.

After finally setting up a local Confluence instance, the backup fails due to UTF-8 encoding: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFSERVER-78782

Once the UTF-8 encoding is solved, comes a problem with a property that is not supported on non-cloud Confluence: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFSERVER-60453

After doing the suggested workarounds, the import is still unsuccessful. Now due to some non-whitespace characters.
