Grey Boxes after Space Restores - re-index, yes, but what else and any documentation?

Those new to the Atlassian Community have posted less than three times. Give them a warm welcome!
We frequently restore spaces to test and production environments - then see grey boxes for images and attachment previews (eg: excel, word) - although the attachment is still accessible.
Some time ago we were told to re-index after the restores - which solves most (not all) issues.
Is this the only way to re-establish the previews after restoring - or are there additional actions required?
Also - for the sanity of our users (...and to prevent me saying "because I said so!") - can someone point me to some neat/succinct documentation for communication purposes? (I've been searching for hours!)
