Error rendering macro 'excerpt-include'

Laurent MARTINEZ
April 9, 2026
It is no longer possible to use the ‘Insert excerpt’ macro if the excerpt is located in another space.
In space A, an excerpt is added to a page.
In space B, the ‘Insert excerpt’ macro is added by selecting the page from space A. Upon refreshing, the following error occurs.
Error rendering macro 'excerpt-include' : No link could be created for 'refB:refA:title page'.
The error occurs because it searches for the excerpt on a page that does not exist (the reference to the current space is systematically added).
This is a critical bug for me, with significant impact.

Hi @Laurent MARTINEZ

We are sorry to hear the excerpt macro and the include excerpt are not working as expected.

We have also tested adding an excerpt macro from another space and it found the content as expected, so we could not replicate the issue.

Since we would need more information and to take a look on the page details to make sure we are not missing any details that could be causing it, we would need to have a support ticket to investigate further.

Could you check with your Organization/site-admin to open a ticket on your behalf, mentioning the issue in the ticket along with the page URL links there?

They can open the support ticket on for you at https://support.atlassian.com/contact/, choosing "Technical issues and bugs" option and Confluence product + affected product site.

Regards,
Jessica

Thank you, Jessica.
After several attempts, I think I have understood when the bug occurs.
It happens when the name of the source page containing the excerpt ends with a question mark (“TITLE ?”).
In that case, when selecting the source page in the “insert excerpt” macro, the question mark is removed and the page cannot be found. All of our FAQ pages end with a question mark.
Regards,
Laurent

Appreciate sharing these findings, Laurent!

I tried adding questions mark to my titles in space A, then using the insert excerpt in space B, but we couldn't still replicate the issue.

We also did some edits to the macro and page to see if it would trigger the error, but no luck.

There could be other characters or something in the title that could be triggering it plus the question mark, so we will keep testing.

Thank you for raising the ticket with us as well on the https://support.atlassian.com/contact/, through the admin, that should help us identifying if there is something in the site and pages, different from our test site(s) where we cannot replicate the issue and we will continue our investigation there too.

Regards,
Jessica

Just a remark regarding your doubts about the character(s) causing the issue: I can confirm that for a page with a given title ending with a question mark (in the final position), I consistently encounter the problem, whereas for another page with the same title but without the question mark at the end, the macro works correctly. I even tested placing the question mark in the middle of the title, and it works correctly in that case as well.

Laurent

Hi @Laurent MARTINEZ and welcome to the community!

I just used the excerpt macros on one of my sites and it works as expected. Do you search for the page in the excerpt-insert macro or just paste the link?

Other standard things to try is to clean the browser cache if there is some rubbish preventing the macro from working.

Let me know if the problem persists

/Staffan

Hi Staffan,

I search the page and I find it.

All my colleagues are facing the same issue, and I have tested it after clearing the cache and using another browser, the problem persist.
Thank you
Laurent
