Error: "Can't save changes"

Tonia Hsieh May 13, 2020

I have been editing a colleague's page, and finding that I had to flip between the published version and my unpublished, edited version, to insert comments on sections of text (I was also commenting in-line in colored text during edits). After I commented on something, I flipped back to edit mode and got this error. Being new to Confluence, I hit refresh, thinking that because I had not actually said to save anything, that this might be like a "restart" on the page. Instead, it appears to have deleted all content.

This was easily 1-2 hours worth of work. Is there a way to recover this? The page is currently wholly unresponsive to me and only shows me this anytime I load it, from anywhere:

Hello @Tonia Hsieh !

As I understand, you are currently unable to edit or even access content from within a specific Confluence Page.

The first thing we could try is to access this page while using another Web Browser:

  1. Open a different web browser
  2. Go to your Confluence site
  3. Log in with your user
  4. Access the same page
  5. Check if editing still shows the described behavior

After that, we can still check a few things:

  1. Is anyone else facing the same issue when they try to edit this page?
  2. Are you still able to edit any other already existing page?
  3. Are you still able to create new pages?
  4. What happens if you access the same page while using incognito/private mode of your browser?

Let us hear from you!

Hi @Diego

I tried logging onto the page via Microsoft Edge and it is still showing the same issue.

To address your other questions:

  1. I do not know about other people experiencing the same problem with this page, but I will ask;
  2. Yes, I can edit other existing pages;
  3. Yes, I can still create new pages;
  4. I get the same error.

I spoke with a few other people about this and one in particular said she had been experiencing the identical problem several times in one day; but because the edits have been few, she has somehow just killed what she did and started over again.

Any further thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. It looks like I have potentially lost all of my work. Do you know if unpublished edits are versioned somewhere, kind of like with git, so that I may recover where I had left things when it crashed?

Thank you!

Tonia

Hello @Tonia Hsieh !

One thing that I did not ask was if you managed to publish the page at least once before this happened. If you did, you should be able to view the page and select the option to copy it.

After you copy it, you can try to edit this copy further. Like this:

  1. Go to affected page
  2. Click the Three dots menu at the top right corner
  3. Select to copy the page
  4. Copy the page into the desired location
  5. Edit the copy further

Other than that, I can tell you that drafts are not versioned, like pages. Once they are discarded, there is not turning back. I have seen this behavior once. The problem there was a draft out of sync with the page. Something that was inserted or happened within the editor broke that sync.  I can not confirm that this is the case with your page, though.

Let us hear from you!
