Create template from page

Deleted user July 30, 2022

I have created a page I wish to reuse.  Is it possible to create a template from this page?

If so how do I do it?

It's not as simple as (in my opinion) it should be.

There's no direct functions for doing it - I would love to have an admin function that says "take this page and copy it into a template and open it in edit mode".

The best we can do at the moment is copy and paste.  Open an empty template page, then open your "source" page for edit as well, in another tab or window.  Select, copy, and paste the content from the source page tab into the template tab.  It's not great, but it does the bulk of the work.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but even this might not be enough since images in the pages won't become attachments to the template if you copy that way, right?

Yes, but you shouldn't be duplicating images by having them in a template.  If you need the same image to appear in several places, use a referral to the original.  That should go into your templates, not a copy.

Why? Honestly, why?  Why would I want to have to manage a separate resource like that?

And where would that resource even be located?

This idea reminds me of the absolute worst part of SharePoint - having to store images separately and then import them into pages.

The whole point is to be able to have a template as a self contained starting point.

I'm not trying to be hostile but this completely destroys the simplicity of the solution.

Remember that we are talking about templates here - you are creating new pages from them.

If you want to repeat an image in a pges, it probably should be in shared storage, because you don't want to have to edit a thousand pages when a reference image changes.  Put the pointer to the image in your library in the template.

If you're creating a new page and want to attach images as new content, you don't want to be creating those images from stock, forcing people to have to over-ride them - you want a placeholder to say "please put your image here"

Ok, before I quite possibly put my foot in my mouth, is there any supporint documentation or links to best practices for this approach?

@[deleted] ! I am a new PM for Confluence templates! I am seeing this request quite often and exploring a functional solution here! Might you be available to connect briefly over a quick zoom call to discuss what your desired functionality here for your specific use cases might look like? Book a time with me! I'd love your feedback! Thx.
