I am working on conducting a content audit on Confluence, as part of an IA process and looking to:

1. Note what is on each page

2. Identify user permissions

3. Update content

4. Archive content

 - Is this process automated within Confluence?

 - Are bulk updates to content possible? for example replacing a certain word across all instances where it appears within Confluence.

Appreciate the help. Thank you.

There's no way to "automate" this, you are mostly describing "use a page", which means reading it and looking at its setup and history.

So to answer your specific questions:

  1. Read the page
  2. Read the space permissions and restrictions on the page
  3. Edit the page
  4. Use the archive function

These processes are as automated as they can be in Confluence

You can do some bulk updates, but they're not as plain as a basic search and replace, you'll need to look for an app for that particular need.
