Someone on our team asked what the hierarchy - if there is one - in Confluence. She suggested Spaces/Pages/Articles. It may well be that pages ARE articles so our understanding could be fundamentally flawed. If you can point me to an article, much appreciated.

Really Confluence is broken up into Spaces and within spaces you have pages. Pages can be organized into a hierarchy. You can use labels to organize content. Here are a couple of articles.

When applying security you start at the space and then go to the page level which inherits from the top down.
