I am planning out moving the Confluence database from a SQL Server 2012 instance into a SQL Server 2019 instance. The current version of Confluence is at 6.11.0 and I was wondering if there were any suggestions to the upgrade path or if it was safe to jump straight into the 7.x versions?

However, the bigger question I have is the route to take for migrating between SQL Server versions. The last supported version on SQL 2012 is 7.3, which does not support SQL 2019.

  • Should I move the 6.11 version to SQL 2019 and upgrade from that instance?
  • Should I upgrade the 6.11 version to 7.3, move to SQL 2019, then upgrade to the latest 7.x? (possibly decreasing compatibility issues)
  • I feel it is safe to assume that I cannot upgrade to 7.x on the SQL 2012 machine, then move it into SQL 2019, but throwing it out there.

Thank you ahead of time for the assist!

Hi @Sean Gorman

This https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/upgrading-confluence-manually-255363437.html should help you determine your upgrade path. From what I see you can upgrade to 7.20 directly. But take a look for yourself!

Well, the manual had the bad news for me. Sounds like I will need to find an intermediary SQL 2017 instance to upgrade on before moving to SQL 2019.

When upgrading from an older Confluence version, where there is no crossover between supported platforms, you may need to upgrade via an intermediary version that supports both your current platform version and future one. For example, if you're running Confluence 5.4 with Oracle 11g and want to upgrade to Confluence 6.x which only supports Oracle 12c, you will need to upgrade via Confluence 5.7 where both Oracle 11g and 12c are supported:

  1. Upgrade to Confluence to 5.7
  2. Upgrade Oracle to 12c and check things run smoothly
  3. Upgrade to Confluence to 6.x
