Confluence Cut&Paste format broken

Hi

Sometime between 21/10/2019 and 08/11/2019 pasting multi-level bullet lists (with a mixture of bullets and numbers) from Outlook into a Confluence page stopped working. I was copying emails, but it may be from any Microsoft tool. The list is pasted, but with minimal bullets and losing most of the levels.

Also any reference to a Jira issue stopped being converted to a URL automatically.

Does anyone know why this was removed/changed?

Hi Mark,

Nice to meet you! I was just looking into this case with Stephen, and we believe we're running into a broader issue. I've raised the following bug:

For me, even if the list is all numbers, all bullets, or a mixture of both, the formatting is stripped. The same doesn't happen if I select Paste and Match Style

CleanShot 2020-01-22 at 15.19.30.png PasteandMatchStyleNEW.png

I don't believe that Windows has the same capability, but importing the Word document as a page both using the new and old editor seems to keep the proper formatting too.

I also noticed if I copy from my Notes application instead, the formatting isn't stripped.

If you need help finding a workaround for your own environment, you can let us know the operating system you're using and I'll try to see what I can find!

Take care,

Shannon

Hi Shannon

Thanks for the reply and raising a defect. I am using Windows and Chrome. After each Scrum ceremony I am copying from an Outlook email body and pasting into a Confluence page via Chrome. You are right, I do not find an option to 'Paste and Match Style'.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Shannon

A possible workaround is to copy first to Notes, then to Confluence. This does change spacing and some bullet shapes, but is at least readable.

Thanks for the pointer on this,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Happy to help anytime!

I found an article that mentions a shortcut you might be able to use on Windows:

I tried the shortcut myself on my Mac, but it doesn't have the same effect as the right-click menu, but it's worth the try.

Regards,

Shannon

Hi Shannon

Interesting article. I did not know about Ctrl-Shift-V. However, whilst it does paste more consistent bullets, they are all in the wrong place, so would still need a total reformat within Confluence. Sorry, but nice try. :-)

Thanks,

Mark

Hello Mark,

Thank you for testing that. It's a shame that doesn't work either, I was hoping it could help you work around it. At least you can use Notes for the time being, but I know that's not ideal.

Let me know if you run into any other issues; I'm happy to help.

Regards,

Shannon

Hello Mark,

Thanks for coming to the Community to figure out what might have changed to cause your odd pasting behavior from Outlook to Confluence Cloud. From your notes, it sounds like you’ve been converted over to the new editor which has some behavioral differences from the legacy editor. Further information on our new editor may be found at Confluence Editing Improvements

Additionally, there are two reported bugs which seem similar to what you’ve described which may be found at:

  • CONFCLOUD-65602 (In the new editor the panel (if empty) disappears if a bullet list is pasted)
  • CONFCLOUD-65927 (Content copied from Google Docs and MS Word has a different behavior when editing it)

If these are similar to what you’re experiencing we ask you to please vote and watch the above requests.

I would like to know more about the Jira issue you mentioned where your Jira issue is not converted to a URL. Could you please explain how you’re mentioning the Jira issue and possibly provide a screenshot for clarification?

We look forward to hearing back to help clarify your editor issues and resolve your linking problems.

Regards,
Stephen Sifers

Thanks for the reply Stephen. 65602 does not seem to apply as I did not create a bullet list in Confluence. 65927 may be related since it is pasting a bullet list from another app, but someone technical would need to confirm that.

I have attached screen shots of a Word doc and the resultant paste of that in a blank Confluence page. I hope this helps?

Word:

Confluence:

On the JIRA Issue paste (or when you type it), it used to create a link to the issue in Jira after publishing the page. Now it remains as plain text. I am aware of issues with hyphens being converted to the graphic symbol, so I always use the '-', as in FT-2524, not FT–2524, and these always worked up until the date I mentioned.

Thanks for your input,

Mark

I believe 1274106 is related to the JIRA link issue.

Hi Stephen

What are your thoughts on this? Has a Defect already been raised for this type of issue?

Thanks,

Mark
