Hello! I'm trying to get Gliffy for the first time, but need Confluence Cloud to do so. When I go to the Confluence page and click any of the options (free/standard/premium, etc.), I am sent to a page with the following message: "upstream connect error or disconnect/reset before headers. reset reason: protocol error".

How can I get past this issue?

Hi @Mercy R ,

This error is a network/proxy issue, not a problem with your browser or Atlassian itself. It usually means that something in your network (such as a firewall, proxy, or VPN) is interfering with your connection to Atlassian's servers.

What you can try:

  • Try a different network
  • Disable VPN or Proxy
  • Clear browser cache and cookies
  • Try a different browser or incognito mode

Hi Mercy,

That “upstream connect error / protocol error” message usually means there’s a temporary connection issue between your browser and Atlassian Cloud’s edge network — often caused by local network settings, browser extensions, or regional filters.

Here’s how you can get past it:

✅ 1. Try using a private/incognito window

Open an incognito window in your browser and go to:
Then select your plan again (Free / Standard / Premium).

If it works there, the issue is likely caused by a browser extension or cached cookie.

⚙️ 2. Clear cache and disable extensions

  • Disable ad blockers, VPNs, or proxy tools (they can interfere with Atlassian’s TLS handshake).
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies.
  • Restart the browser and try again.

🌐 3. Try a different network or device

Sometimes company firewalls or regional ISPs reset secure connections before the handshake completes.
If possible, try connecting from:

  • A mobile hotspot, or
  • A personal network (not corporate VPN).

🧭 4. Check Atlassian’s status page

It’s also a good idea to check if there’s an ongoing incident affecting Cloud sign-ups:

If all systems are operational, the issue is definitely local or network-related.

📞 5. Still not working?

If you’ve tried the above and still get the same message, reach out directly to Atlassian Support — they can verify your signup request and check logs on their end:
