Can I subscribe users to descendant notifications ?

As it is currently not possible to subscribe users to watch a space, I was wondering if you could subscribe users to desendant notifications instead ?

For older version of Confluence, there is a free Descendant Notification plugin from Adaptavist. For later versions, it is a paid plugin called Enterprise Notification.
