Add new Macro categories in Confluence

We have many homegrown Confluence macros; we'd like to bundle them within their own specific macro category.  Is there a way to change this via configuration setting somewhere?

Not that I am aware of. Even if you develop a plugin, you need to assign the macro to one of the current categories. If Atlassian were to allow that, you can imagine every vendor wanting to define their own category.
