Accidentally added two users with same email address and can't delete one

I was adding a user and somehow accidentally created two accounts with the same email address.  The user then activated both somehow from the welcome email. I disabled one, had the user log in and it stated account disabled.  So I reactivated it and disabled the other and they could log in.  The problem is that I now have two accounts (one enabled and one disabled) and can not delete the disabled one. No content was contributed, and it is confusing when working in account management two have both. I just want to remove the disabled account or somehow change the email address but can't.  Anything you suggest?
